National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), held annually on February 7th, was launched 16 years ago as a national response to the growing HIV and AIDS epidemic in African American communities.
African Americans, more than any other racial or ethnic group, continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. While comprising only 12 percent of the U.S. population, African Americans accounted for almost half (44 percent) of new HIV diagnoses in 2014, compared to 27 percent for whites and 23 percent for Latinos. Additionally, from 2011 – 2013, only 38 percent of African Americans were consistently retained in care. More troubling, African Americans maintain the highest death rate among all populations diagnosed with HIV.
