US Presidential Candidates in Contest of Atrocities: AMLO
Khamisi posted a news article in Latin America
On Wednesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) said the U.S. presidential race has devolved into a contest among candidates trying to outdo each other in "atrocities." RELATED: Kidnapped Mayor Sanchez Was Released in Mexico "As the elections loom in the United States, there is a kind of contest to see who says the most atrocities, who is the most brazen in threatening Mexico, in blaming Mexico... that is what is happening in the United States," AMLO said, calling on the Hispanic community to disregard the rhetoric. "So what should we do? Well, not take these statements seriously, they are nonsense," he added, urging Mexicans residing in the United States to not vote for candidates who speak ill of migrants or support anti-immigrant policies. Over 40 million Mexicans live in the United States. Data from Pew Research Center showed that Mexicans are the largest population of Hispanic origin living in America, accounting for 60 percent of the U.S. Hispanic population in 2021. Three teens fatally shoot their schoolmates over a ‘stupid’ years-long feud, police say
Khamisi posted a news article in General News
Authorities in South Carolina said three teenagers shot and killed their schoolmates over a “stupid” years-long feud. Per the New York Post, the fatal Sunday incident occurred outside an abandoned home, and another 14-year-old was also injured from the shooting. The suspects linked to the shootings were identified as Jahkeem Griffin, 17, Karlos Gibson, 17, and an unidentified 14-year-old. The three have since been charged with three counts of murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a handgun under the age of 18. “Over something stupid. Over something that happened a couple of years ago. A beef that just continues to grow and then young people decide that they’re going to solve it by shooting,” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said at a press conference. “You have three teens who will never see adulthood. This is because of what? A disagreement? ‘I don’t like you, you did something to me, so I’m gonna pay you back, so I’m gonna kill you’?” Police said the victims were outside the abandoned building when the three suspects confronted and shot at them. The deceased victims were identified as 16-year-old Jakobe Fanning, Caleb Wise, 16, and Dre’Von Riley, 17. They all attended Eau Claire High School. Lott said the feud between the teens had to do with a burglary incident that occurred two years ago. Griffin and Gibson were also students at Eau Claire High School while the surviving victim and the unidentified gunman studied at the same middle school, the New York Post reported. On Monday, the district added extra security and counseling at the high school for the “unimaginable tragedy” that occurred. District superintendent Craig Witherspoon also described the incident as “senseless gun violence.” And though Lott did not provide details on how the teens got their hands on the murder weapons, he highlighted the cases of gun thefts from cars in Columbia, saying there was a high number of gun owners leaving their weapons in their vehicles. “I’ve talked about many times where a gun is gonna get you one or two places: It’s gonna be the cemetery or prison, and yesterday we saw that play out again,” said Lott. “You stand here and you shake your head and just wonder why. Why can’t these kids do something else besides just resort to violence and using guns? Doesn’t solve a problem. Doesn’t make anything better. It just makes it worse.” Griffin and Gibson will be tried as adults while a judge will determine if the 14-year-old suspect’s case will remain in juvenile court. View the full article -

Deion Sanders still winning in Black community after first loss at Colorado
Khamisi posted a news article in Culture & Entertainment
Sanders has turned the Boulder campus into an unexpected cultural phenomenon, where the vivacity and early success of the team has forced the attention of even those who don’t watch college football, with a lot of support coming from the Black community. One of Trevon Hamlet’s core memories from attending the University of Colorado is living on campus his freshman year and being able to count on one hand how many Black people he’d see in a day. Hamlet, who played lacrosse at Colorado from 2014-19 and still lives in the area, was the only Black person on his team in a school where African American students made up less than 2% of the population. He said a lot of those Black students were athletes. Deion Sanders speaks after being introduced as the new head football coach at the University of Colorado during a news conference Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, in Boulder, Colo. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) Four years after Hamlet graduated, Colorado’s student makeup doesn’t look much different. But football coach Deion Sanders has turned the Boulder campus into an unexpected cultural phenomenon, where the vivacity and early success of the team has forced the attention of even those who don’t watch college football, with a lot of support coming from the Black community. “There’s so much Blackness that’s involved in this, and it’s the biggest story in the country,” Hamlet said. “Although you have standard supporters from CU, you have so many different people that are now getting behind this, and it feels like there’s people getting behind the Black community. Deion’s really promoting the Black community. I feel like it’s our turn.” Black creators are posting about Colorado football online. Black people all over the country are wearing Buffaloes gear and rooting for the team despite having no connection to Colorado other than pride and support for what Sanders is doing. Kids have tried to peek over the gates near the Buffaloes’ practice facility for a glimpse at it all. More than 7 million people watched the Buffaloes upset last year’s national championship runner-up TCU in their season opener on Sept. 2, the most-watched college football game that day. Colorado’s first three games of the season were rated 77% higher among Black viewers than anywhere else in the country, according to data provided by ESPN research. Black viewers made up 23% of the audience for those games, compared with 15% for non-Colorado games. Then-No. 10 Oregon handed the Buffaloes their first loss in a 42-6 rout last Saturday that knocked the Buffaloes out of the AP Top 25. Looking at their schedule, more setbacks are likely — but Black support for Sanders and Colorado is as much about culture and representation as it is wins and losses. That game was the most-watched of the 2023 season, drawing 10.4 million viewers on ABC, and the Buffaloes have a highly anticipated matchup against No. 8 Southern California coming up Saturday. Former athletes and celebrities have made appearances at Colorado’s Folsom Field — from Pro Football Hall of Famers Michael Irvin and Terrell Owens to Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry of the NBA. Before the rivalry game against Colorado State, Sanders walked out with the Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne. “We don’t really have very much of a Black community,” said Reiland Rabaka, the director of the Center for African and African American Studies at Colorado. Boulder has an African American population of 1.1%. “I’ve been here for nearly 20 years. I’ve never seen anything like this.” Sanders, the former football and baseball star, has embraced stardom in a way unlike other athletes since he wore flashy sunglasses and layers of chains in his playing days, and he has carried that aura with him as a coach. He speaks with a pastoral vibrato and has a contemporary-yet-principled coaching style, and he makes headlines with idiosyncratic sayings like: “I’m a monument, not a moment.” Sanders has also been vocal about issues that affect the Black community — including the need for more attention and resources to be poured into historically Black colleges and universities — and about his mission to inject a new culture into Colorado football. He’s made it clear that he’s not changing, no matter the amount of criticism that his coaching style has received. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, right, hugs his son, safety Shilo Sanders, after he returned an interception for a touchdown in the first half of an NCAA college football game against Colorado State Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, in Boulder, Colo. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) “Not everybody wants to hear the truth all the time, but he tells the truth,” said Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, a tailback at Colorado from 1987-90 and still the Buffaloes’ career rushing leader. “And the only thing he’s doing, he’s helping those young men by teaching them at an early age what accountability is about. And so that’s what I admire about him.” Colorado won four conference championships from 1989-91 and 2001, as well as a national title in 1990. That was the last time that Darian Hagan, Colorado’s quarterback from 1988-91, had seen so much excitement around the program before Sanders’ arrival. “I have a 78-year-old aunt, and she calls me after every game telling me how proud she is of our program and of Sanders,” Hagan said. “Just to have a 78-year-old woman staying up late to watch football games, it tells you a lot about people and the belief that we have in him.” Sanders’ early Colorado tenure conjures memories of pioneering college basketball coach John Thompson, whose Georgetown Hoyas were an anomaly on a predominantly white campus but garnered the unwavering support of the hip-hop and Black community. The 6-foot-10 Thompson became the first Black coach to win an NCAA Division I basketball championship and was outspoken on social issues. Sanders’ Buffaloes aren’t in the championship neighborhood yet, but like what happened at Georgetown, the momentum building at Colorado transcends sports. “I was a DePaul fan growing up and I rooted for them,” said Randall Crutcher, a former Creighton basketball player from the Chicago area. “But not when they played against John Thompson. I rooted for Georgetown. I’m rooting for the Black team.” Crutcher lives in an Omaha suburb and became a Nebraska football fan after attending college in the state, but he rooted against the Cornhuskers when they played the Buffaloes. Colorado hired Sanders last December to turn around a dormant program that won one game in 2022. Sanders was coming off three successful seasons as the head coach at Jackson State, leading the Tigers to consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and putting a national spotlight on HBCUs and their culture. For Hamlet, Sanders represents an assuagement of the stereotypes of what Black men can do to achieve success. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders runs onto the field with his team for a an NCAA college football game against TCU Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero) “Being in a school that’s predominantly white, I’ve always felt that I had to change who I am to be successful,” Hamlet said. “It’s so nice to see a Black man do what he’s doing — have so much influence, have so much power, so much authenticity — that shows that our culture does not have to be modified to be great.” Rabaka said Black people can see part of themselves in Sanders, who was raised in Fort Myers, Florida, mostly by his mother, and his ability to transform his life through sports. What also will continue to resonate with people is Sanders’ commitment to building up the Black community outside of football and embracing the same ideals of hip-hop culture, Rabaka added. “Instead of dissing these young kids that come out of very similar conditions as Coach Prime did, he actually embraces them and just is challenging us to use our platforms progressively,” Rabaka said. “So don’t just help yourself, how about helping somebody else? And that fits in with the hip-hop aesthetic whenever we say, ‘Each one teach one.’ That’s very basic to old school hip-hop culture.” TheGrio is FREE on your TV via Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Roku, and Android TV. Judge Chutkan denies Trump’s request to recuse herself in federal election subversion case
Khamisi posted a news article in Politics & Government
Chutkan has scheduled trial to begin March 4, 2024. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said Wednesday she won’t recuse herself from Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case in Washington, rejecting the former president’s claims that her past comments raise doubts about whether she can be fair. Chutkan, who was nominated to the bench by President Barack Obama and was randomly assigned to Trump’s case, said in her written decision that she sees no reason to step aside. The case, scheduled for trial in March, accuses the Republican of illegally scheming to overturn his election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Left to right: Federal District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, and former President Donald Trump. (Photo: AP News) There’s a high bar for recusal, and legal experts had widely considered Trump’s request to be a long shot aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the case publicly that could only sour the relationship between the judge and the defense in court. Lawyers for Trump did not immediately return an email seeking comment. In seeking Chutkan’s recusal, defense lawyers cited statements she had made in two sentencing hearings of participants in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol in which they said she had appeared to suggest that Trump deserved to be prosecuted and held accountable. They said the comments suggested a bias against him that could taint the proceedings. But Chutkan vigorously objected to the those characterizations of her comments. “It bears noting that the court has never taken the position the defense ascribes to it: that former ‘President Trump should be prosecuted and imprisoned,’” Chutkan wrote. “And the defense does not cite any instance of the court ever uttering those words or anything similar.” It’s the second time Trump has tried unsuccessfully to get a judge removed from one of the criminal cases against him. Judge Juan Manuel Merchan, who is overseeing Trump’s New York hush money criminal case, rejected similar demands that he step aside, saying he is certain of his “ability to be fair and impartial.” Chutkan has stood out as one of the toughest punishers of defendants charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection, in which a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. Trump, the early front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has personally assailed her on social media as he tries to make the case that the prosecution is politically motivated. Federal special counsel Jack Smith’s team said there was no valid basis to have Chutkan removed from the case. Like Chutkan, they said she never said that Trump was legally or morally to blame for the events of Jan. 6 or that he deserved to be punished. Chutkan wrote in her order that though recusal is a valid step when merited, judges should not step aside “without cause,” as she suggested the Trump lawyers were asking her to do. Trump’s team had pointed in their recusal bid to a sentencing hearing for a Jan. 6 defendant in which Chutkan said the rioters had “blind loyalty to one person who, by the way, remains free to this day.” Chutkan wrote in her decision Wednesday that she was merely stating an “undisputed fact,” – that Trump was free — “but it went no further.” Chutkan is also considering a request by Smith’s team for a narrow gag order that would bar Trump from making “inflammatory” and “intimidating” comments about witnesses, lawyers and other people involved in the case. Trump’s lawyers objected this week to that request. Chutkan has scheduled trial to begin March 4, 2024, over the vigorous objections of defense lawyers who said that would not give them enough time to prepare. The case in Washington’s federal court is one of four criminal cases confronting the former president as he seeks to regain the White House. You also need Makhaula because you see that in the midfield they are vulnerable. Makhaula is solid and doesn’t lose possession easily like [Siphelo] Baloni. Reuters: Sterling fell to six-month low against a strengthening dollar on Wednesday as markets are pricing in that the Bank of England (BoE) is done hiking interest rates as the economy deteriorated, while British inflation subsided. British Pound Sterling fell Sterling is set for the biggest monthly drop since August 2022, down more than 4% in September, as money markets are pricing in no further BoE rate hikes this year, according to LSEG data. Traders also expect the central bank to start cutting rates next summer. The BoE kept rates on hold last week – the first meeting at which it had done so since December 2021 – on the back of signs economic growth is slowing and data showing a surprise cooling in Britain’s inflation. Sterling dropped 0.06% to $1.2150 , after briefly touching $1,2135, its lowest since March 2023. It has been steadily sliding from a 15-month high in July, but is still up almost 18% from a year ago when former British Prime Minister Liz Truss’ borrowing plans drove it to a record low. ALSO READ: Who is the richest person in the world today? Top 10 list – 28 September 2023 The British currency rose 0.1% against the euro to 86.87 pence, after touching on Tuesday its lowest of 87.05 pence against the single currency since May. “The capitulation in terminal rate expectations, allied to the realization that the BoE is now done hiking rates due to building macro headwinds, underlines residual sterling headwinds,” Jeremy Stretch, head of G10 FX strategy at CIBC Capital Markets, said. Recent data showed British companies endured a much tougher September than feared, marked by growing unemployment and recession risks. The next key releases are consumer credit and mortgage approvals due on Friday, which will likely maintain ongoing pressure on sterling, Stretch added. The prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. rates supported the dollar index, sending the greenback to its highest level since November against a basket of peers. South African Rand Reuters: The South African rand extended losses on Wednesday, after tumbling the day before on the back of soaring U.S. Treasury yields. At 1501 GMT, the rand traded at 19.1275 against the dollar, about 0.24% weaker than its previous close. The dollar last traded around 0.35% stronger against a basket of global currencies. ALSO READ: Who are the richest South Africans in the world today? – 28 September 2023 On Tuesday, the rand lostnearly 1.7% against the greenback at one point on the back of a surge in U.S. Treasury yields as investors turned away from riskier assets. “ZAR ‘losses’ this week are really just USD gains,” said Rand Merchant Bank analysts in a research note, adding that continued hawkish Fed talk has kept alive the risk of another hike, strengthening the dollar. The rand, like other risk-sensitive currencies, is often swayed by global factors like U.S. monetary policy. South Africa will release producer price inflation, money supply, trade balance and budget figures for August on Thursday and Friday, which will give clues on the health of the economy. Global Markets Reuters: Oil prices scaled one-year highs on Thursday while world stocks eyed their longest losing streak in two years as worries deepened about persistently high interest rates, sending investors to shelter in the safety of a surging U.S. dollar. A surprisingly big drop in U.S. crude stocks has stoked concern that fuel demand is outstripping production right when markets least needed another supply-side shock. Traders are also watching lawmakers’ efforts to avoid a U.S. government shutdown. MSCI’s index of global equities moved a fraction lower and could notch its 10th straight daily fall on Thursday, which would equal a long losing streak from 2021. The moon should be jealous, according to the band Måneskin in their song Timezone. But can the MOON and its phases really affect you? According to studies, the planetary body can have a profound effect on how your day is going – and sometimes even how you sleep. ALSO READ: Moon News: When is the rare PENUMBRAL ECLIPSE? Many people swear that they can’t sleep during the fullest phase of the sky orb. Other people think the phenomenon is potential nonsense and believe it has nothing to do with it. Who is right – and is the MOON affecting YOU? ALSO READ: Watch the Blue Crane Moon on September 30 Here’s what studies have to say about behaviour during changes in the sky. Are lunar eclipses dangerous? South Africans will be able to see a rare penumbral lunar eclipse this year. This is the fourth and final eclipse for South Africa. Mark your calendars and set reminders for the right date if you want to catch this rare celestial event in action! ALSO READ: Moon in Zulu: Did YOU know how to say it? Can it be dangerous to look at an eclipse? According to Sciencing.org, only solar (sun) eclipses are dangerous to look directly at. Forbes confirms the same information. Although a solar eclipse can harm your eyes, a lunar eclipse is perfectly okay to stare at. The MOON and Insomnia Can the moon affect how you sleep? According to studies, the answer might be yes. When at its fullest, the Sleep Foundation says that the cycle might very well make people sleep worse. Moonlight could cause insomnia – or make the symptoms of the sleep-related condition a little worse to deal with if you already can’t sleep at night. ALSO READ: Can Full Moons affect CRIME in South Africa? Science.org says that this might have something to do with the large amount of light it reflects. During the moon event, the night sky appears brighter. This might even fool the brain into thinking it’s “still too bright to sleep” – and this is what starts the loop for insomniacs. If you think that you sleep any worse during certain times of the month, you would be absolutely right. How to sleep better during FULL MOON If you can’t sleep during the moon, there are some things you can do to sleep better at night. Draw curtains shut, and make sure that you can’t SEE it’s full moon. Cover your eyes when you sleep, so that light can’t disturb you. Change your bedtime, and go to sleep at a different time. Avoid heavy meals before bedtime. READ MORE ARTICLES BY ALEX J COYNE View the full article
