  • Eldorado Park residents will protest until issues are prioritised

Eldorado Park residents revealed their intention to picket outside the local police station until there is something done about the violence and crime in the area.

Residents claim 20 lives were taken in just three months

Residents who have been participating in the protest claim that around 20 people have been shot dead in alleged gang-related incidents in the past three months. Just before the weekend, Eldorado park residents staged a protest against the rising crime and violence in their area.

Residents blockaded the N12 with burning tyres and police officers were deployed to the area. Ward Councillor Dwain Ponsonby says that crime has escalated at an alarming rate in Eldorado Park.

Ward Councillor explains the increase in crime in the area

It has escalated to an alarming rate. Promises have been made with the presidential visit in 2015, in 2019, the same thing, nothing has changed. We’ve been sitting at the police station now, setting out demands for the last two weeks, and nobody has the audacity to pitch,” Ponsonby said.

SABC News reports that Ponsonby recalled a shooting that occurred while an official from Johannesburg’s mayor’s office was there.

We’re losing people daily, we actually had a visit the other day from an official from the mayor’s office, and whilst in discussion, a shooting happened, and he had first glance of going to the scene and seeing [of the incident] as well as the escalation of the shootings in Eldos,” said Ponsonby.

Eldorado Park: Suspects arrested for several murders

Previously, it was reported that the Provincial Organised Crime Unit in Gauteng says it has made strides in the fight against killings in the community of Eldorado Park. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province says three suspects, including a minor, have been arrested for the murder of two victims aged 19 and 20 years old.

“On 10 September 2022, the victims were allegedly shot and killed while walking on the street at Eldorado Park. The two victims aged 19 and 20-years-old were walking on the street when the suspects shot them before fleeing the scene.

“The three suspects aged 17, 22 and 31-years-old were arrested on 23 September 2022 and are expected to appear before court soon on charges of murder,” said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello in a brief statement. Read the full story here.
